Take a Look at our Looking Glasses.
Chalk & Chisel mirrors are sourced in France and England. They are restored in Somerset using several layers of chalk paint, then sanded and waxed to seal. We aim to respect the authentic character of the mirrors—you’ll see the rough patinas of age, not neat and pristine shabby chic. Some mirrors are untouched, as in our Barbola Collection, and the vintage gilt mirrors.
Below you’ll see a representative selection of our mirrors—some are for sale, some are now sold. We aim to offer accessible prices, from £20 for a small chalked mirror to around £250 for a large antique French mirror. Many of our vintage mirrors are in the £40-£90 range.

The Chalk & Chisel Barbola Collection:
The word Barbola comes from an embroidery term where a fabric stiffener is used in place of wires to mould the petals and leaves of flowers. It became popularised in the 1920’s in England as a mirror frame style that imitated expensive wooden carvings. The foundation of the frames was gesso and traditionally the frames feature floral motifs which are further enhanced by the colourful palette. They were produced in the 1920’s, 1930’s and 1940’s and all our Barbola examples are originals from this period.
Barbola mirrors are seeing an increase in popularity and becoming a collectors’ item. Each mirror is unique. We sell a small well-priced table-top and wall-hanging collection and our stock is refreshed monthly.
